Are you training or just working out?
Really you should be doing both, but we often fall into the workout mode rather than the training mode. So what's the difference? It's all a state of mind. You see when you are training you are monitoring every thing you can; your breathing, your posture, your accuracy, flow, consistence, etc. When you workout you're just putting the body through the paces and basically you're getting a workout. Now, please understand they are linked; you don't get just one without the other. You will get both the training and the workout. It is just that you will be focusing on one side or the other for an emphasis during that block of time. The trick is to be on the side that you need at that time.
If you have just learned the movements you should be training more, if you have them down you use them to workout with. The idea is to get the best workout while training. This is how you do it:
FIRST, to train a technique you are either going to go slow and as close to 100% accurate as you can or you are going full blast like it is real. Now, a few cautions; first, going full blast all the time, will without, fail damage your body over time. The older you are, the quicker it will be. So you need to be very warmed up before you start off hard, it is also usually beneficial to use a bag or shield so you have something that will absorb your power so your joints will not take the full blunt.
This might be a good training program for the intermediate student:First 15 minutes use as a warm up. Jumping jacks, very light loose front kicks and side kicks Combinations of blocks and punches.
Second 10 minutes do all of your forms.
Third: 15-20 minutes real slow with 100% accurate moves
Fourth: 10 minutes of full combative motion if accuracy is high. In other words apply what your confident using and apply it like it is real.
Last: 5-10 minutes stretching and cool down.
As you get better, you can change that around a lot. You could do hard days followed by easy days or whatever works for you. As long as you are improving, not hurting yourself, recovering in time, then you are doing it right.
I know that's a bit brief, but if you need me to help you out just call or ask when you see me. I hope this helps a little.
P.S. You train your Kempos, you workout with pushups.
